hiring my doula was the best decision i ever made when was pregnant. she is an amazing and fabulous woman who brought so much to our pregnancy and birth. her presence throughout was invaluable.
i would recommend to any and all pregnant women to find a doula who can support them and their partners throughout the journey.
we had a medical intervention-free birth with a fantastic midwife and great nurses in a hospital on november 30 2007 after 3 hrs 42 min of labor from water breaking to baby's emergence. we were able to keep our baby's placenta and avoid all unnecessary medical procedures. i was able to practice yoga with my doula at least three times a week in her prenatal class for the last four months of my pregnancy including the morning before i went into labor. i have to credit her for her support and encouragment as well as that of my midwives and my "birthing from within" fellow students and our instructors.
birth is sacred and it can be beautiful for everyone involved. we were so blessed to have our doula in our lives and i just have to put in my two cents on the value of doulas in the pregnancy and birth process.
blessings for all in 2008.

Re: i love my doula
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 4:03 PMwow. thank you so much for sharing that. i am pretty new to all this. i didn't realize you could have that kind of a birth in a hospital. how did you arrange it? was it difficult? how did you find your doula and her class? -

Re: i love my doula
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 10:20 PMi juat knew what i wanted and i did what i could to bring that about. i had originally planned on having a water birth but there was too much meconium in the amniotic fluid, but my doula and my patner were there and our nurses and midwife were all on board for a healthy happy natural baby birth and thankfully it turned out that way.
the baby was a big help too. she was super ready to be born when she was...she worked with me.
my doula was brought to me by a client and friend of mine who hired her for her birth in april. she insisted i meet sarah the doula and we hit it off and my partner and i decided to hire sarah for our birth. she happens to be a pre and post natal yoga instructor so that really worked for me as a yogini myself.
my doula suggested we also attend the birthing from within classes taught by two other doulas in our area and also a part of the childbirth collective-- a local progressive group of doulas, midwives, childbirth educators and bodyworkers in minnesota. we attended the classes and prepared to have this baby. one of our nurses had done some birthing from within training as well which was very helpful as she knew where we were coming from and could relate to our birth philosophy. all of the those who attended our birth were supportive of an intervention-free birth. the attending midwife wanted to allow me to bring my baby out with a few directions and with sarah and my partner right there i was able to really get into the process of having a baby.
